The Passage of Time

I have been working very hard for the last ten or more years, and it never seems to come to an end. We all dream of reaching our dreams, but they’re unreachable, as when we get them, they disappear. We are always in need of pursuing, and chasing is fun, real fun!

I remember a woman in her thirties, well dressed and a succesful career, having achieved nearly all her goals, but just one was missing. She wanted to learn a foreign language.

Learning English was actually the best way to move forward her career, so she came to me. She was willing to join classes and was not afraid of the tuition fees or the effort needed.

Need to know when!

There was just one thing that woman lacked: patience. She asked how long would it take her to speak English with a decent fluency.

The answer to that questions varies hugely. In any case, it depends only on the student, not on the teacher. But it’s not a short road.

I can make you understand and know a bit of a language in a not very long period if you wish. My intensive courses prove to be great for learning Spanish fast. But there is something afterwards.

You need to go on learning and using the language. You don’t learn a language, you live it! If you do it, it doesn’t matter how long it’s going to take you, as it is a part of your life and you don’t want it to have an end.

I quit

I explained this, for me quite obvious thing, to that woman, and she did the cleverest thing, she gave it up just before she even started.

She thought learning a language was like learning to ride a bicycle. Once you’ve achieved it, it’s there.

But learning a language is something totally different, is a process in which you grow with the language. And yes, you can make it happen faster, depending how much life you put into it.

Go on

So if you want to learn a language, you need to go on with it, and never give up. I remember I found that same woman a few years afterwards, and she told me: “if only I spoke English”.

It was obvious, but if only she had started putting an effort on it, by the time I found her, she would have improved hugely.
